TELEPATHY - A SCIENCE OR MYSTIC

There has been many reports in one way or the other about someonewho thinks about others, be it a loved one or just an old mate/friend and within the next minute these people being thought of appear vis-à-vis with the one doing the thinking. There was one instance where an old woman from a rural community in Ghana claimed to have once had a thought of
her first son who was far out in a different city and within the next minute there came her son.

Again, in the late 19th century, a sorcerer called Washington Irving Bishop would perform “thought reading” demonstrations
where he could tell others what they were thinking. Bishop claimed that there was no supernatural powers- and ascribed his powers to “muscular sensitivity”. Bishop was investigated later on by a group of scientists which included the then editor of the “British Medical Journal” and the psychologist Francis
Galton. Bishop performed a lot of feats successfully but, Bishop during the experiment required a human contact who knew the
correct answer as a medium. Most of such tales are being heard of day in day out yet there has been no
accurate definition scientifically for such a phenomenon.

Telepathy is an English word which was coined from the Greek words- “tele” which means distant and “patheia” which also denotes
feeling or passion, and means – a supposed transmission of information from one person
to another without using a physically known sense channels or interactions. This word was
devised by Frederic W. H. Myers who was a classical scholar in 1882.

Science- for a 130 years of research still finds no comprehensive evidence of telepathy as a
real life phenomenon. Many studies purported to understand, detect and utilize telepathy
have been put forward yet, no substantial result from even well controlled intensive
experiments exist. At the end of series of experiments, science has concluded that there
is “no adequate scientific evidence that people can read others’ mind or perceptions. Research
has not identified one single indisputable telepath or clairvoyance.”

From the mystical point of studies, telepathy does exist and is well understood, used, and
detected. In ancient Europe for instance there was evidence of telepathy when magicians and
enchanters could tell persons what they (the people) were thinking and it was all manifest and true.

In some parts of Africa, telepathy
plays a vital role in traditional spirituality. It is believed in those parts that people who were
telepathic were to be considered as specially gifted by the spirits, and are revered as clairvayant.

In other parts of Africa too telepathy is seen as a manifestation of you thinking repeatedly about someone or vice versa.

Certain parts of Asia also ascribes telepathy on meditation. It is believed there that the mind possess supernatural powers– which is the easiest means of transporting feelings, information,, and even also connecting one’s self with God.

But in all, the question still remains whether telepathy bears scientific traits which is yet to be discovered or a mystical, supernatural phenomenon.
